Join TRI Art & Culture for an intimate culinary journey with Handpicked by Amrita inspired by, and paired with, readings from Sweet Excess: Crafting Mishti in Bengal by Dr. Ishita Dey.
For many of us, food is more than simple sustenance. What we eat is embedded in our cultures, daily rituals, and the ways we connect with one another, ultimately shaping an understanding of taste, home, and belonging. These attributes of food are also what allow us to read recipes as archival maps of history – composites of ingredients that carry stories of migration, trade, innovation, and ecology.
This winter, as part of our exploration and celebration of Kolkata’s street culture and subcultures, TRI Art & Culture is pleased to present Text, Tastes and Tales of Mishti, a morning of eating and reading that explores the ubiquitous Bengali mishti through its histories, hierarchies, and heritage. Over a seven-course mini meal prepared by Handpicked by Amrita, diners will delve into the ethnographic research of Dr. Ishita Dey presented in her recent publication, Sweet Excess: Crafting Mishti in Bengal. Together, we will journey through the sweet shops, homes, fairs, and festivals across Bengal to discover how mishti has become a conspicuous cultural consumption and to learn what mishti has to teach us about our region.
This is a ticketed event priced at Rs. 1,200 per seat. Limited seats available. Following registration, a member of the TRI team will be in touch with next steps for payment.
