The Power of Mussels: An Overview of Pennsylvania’s Freshwater Mussels and their Importance to the Health of our Aquatic Environments
#DYK Freshwater mussels are considered keystone species in aquatic communities around the world.
Mussels provide ecosystems services including water filtration and streambed stabilization which helps to maintain the health of our streams, rivers, and lakes. However, in North America, we are at risk of losing many of these species, as 74% of them are recognized as endangered, threatened, or of special concern status.
Join us on Wednesday, August 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Middle Creek Visitors Center in Stevens, for our August Speaker Series event, The Power of Mussels, with Jordan Allison of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
This presentation will provide an overview of freshwater mussel life history, diversity, and ecology including a case study examining species recovery efforts in several Pennsylvania rivers.
As a reminder, these events are open to the public and free to attend. We look forward to you joining us and learning more about the importance of our nature’s water filtration systems!
