Our next Bundeena Talks with Nick Riemer and Wendy Bacon will examine these questions, looking at the rights and responsibilities of academics and the media. Our focus will be on what is said and unsaid, by whom, to what ends, and the means which are used to determine this…
o Wendy Bacon is a Walkley Award winning investigative journalist, known for unearthing corruption. She worked for Sixty Minutes, SBS, and Fairfax, later becoming a Professor of Journalism at the University of Technology, Sydney. Still widely regarded as one of Australia’s most respected journalists, she continues to write for a range of publications. Her latest articles examine lobby groups attempting to shape Australian politics.
o Nick Riemer is a senior lecturer in Modern English at the University of Sydney. His work may also be found in Overland, Arena, Michael West media, the Guardian, Al Jazeera and other publications. Two years ago he published Boycott Theory and the Struggle for Palestine: Universities, Intellectualism and Liberation. He is currently being sued in the Federal Court. The claim is that his support for Palestine is antisemitic. The case is being brought under Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act, and will be the first to explicitly test whether Zionism, a political doctrine, should be protected under race hate laws.
