Here’s a poem about a daughter of the City.
PAM
I was very glad
in Bradford undergraduate days
to get to go out with Pam.
She was pretty
sophisticated.
She introduced me to
the cellist Paul Tortelier
but not to tortellini, though.
No – to spaghetti.
Spaghetti, longer than an inch
and not tomato-sauced out of a can.
Pam, from Hull,
her dad, a Dansom Lane car dealer
with a well worn face
and the grace of a seagull
leaning into the wind.
When my own dad came to visit us
he demanded to know Pam’s intentions.
‘Do you love John?’
‘Are you going to marry John?’
Pam kept pretty quiet,
keeping her eye on the spaghetti:
uncut,
like the confetti.
