- HUFree Gallery, Western Library
Join Hull-based photographer George Norris, who comes from generations of Hull horse traders and rag-and-bone merchants, as he retraces his families regular journey to Appleby Horse Fair travelling by horse and cart.
George will be sharing stories and images about the Norris family heritage, the people he met along the way, and the horse fair itself. He will also give a personal tour of the photographs on display in the exhibition.
In 2023 George received Arts Council England funding to help him concentrate on his photography. In May 2024 he travelled with this brother Carl, a horse-trader, on Carl’s horse and cart, to Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria. The photos in the Untethered exhibition are a selection taken on that journey. They show communities and families attending one of the last surviving horse fairs and a tradition which has taken place for hundreds of years.
The exhibition closes on Wednesday 30 July 2025.

About HuFree Gallery:
HuFree Gallery is a brand new gallery with a difference in the HU3 neighbourhood of Hull. It is located on the top floor of the Western Library and works with local residents, groups, businesses and creatives, to programme photographic, film and print exhibitions and activities, right at the heart of the community.
It launched on 3 May 2025 with Untethered by local resident George Norris.
The gallery celebrates a rich seam of photographers and film makers focusing on, or coming from working class life, largely from HU3 and Hull, but with occasional national and international guests. It will aim to capture and reveal the kind of lives, past and present, that are often hidden and paid scant attention.
Three Ways East has co-developed this important new space through its EofUs project, guided by artist Kate Genever, together with Hull Libraries and other local partners.
