Speculative History
Fennelly’s of Callan is excited to welcome Phil, Matthew and Neil on Friday the 30th of May to our garden courtyard.
Experimental, improvising collaboration between three fascinating music creators.
Phil Christie is a composer, improviser and performer based in Dublin, Ireland.
His work focuses on small situations - musical and otherwise - with an emphasis on
semantic dead ends and rhythmic layering,
Under the auspices of The Bonk, he writes and performs compositions with various
collaborators. ‘The Bonk Seems To Be A Verb’ was released as a limited edition in
2017 by independent cassette imprint thirtythree-45. The follow up ‘Greater Than or
Equal to The Bonk’ was released in 2023.
Matthew Houston is a musician and composer who works with conventional
instruments, computer music processes, and field recordings. Since his childhood in
rural USA he has played in hardcore punk and noise rock bands, free improvisation
groups, and as a soloist performing American fingerstyle guitar and electro-acoustic
works. Recently he has played in the National Concert Hall Gamelan and is active in
the rock bands Perfect Hair (Maine, USA) and Whozyerman? (Dublin, IE). For more
information, check his website: www.allstudium.com
Neil Quigley is a Composer and Artist from Ireland who is currently living between
Kilkenny, Ireland and Glasgow, Scotland.
His recent solo works centre on a speculative history of an audio research laboratory
based in parochial Ireland in the late 20th century. This work is released as an
ongoing anthology series entitled the "Kilkenny Electroacoustic Research Laboratory
Anthology”.
His work has been described as “all very synthetic, even sometimes comical” and “very
confident” by The Journal of Music, as “also rather beautiful” by Nialler9, and as
having a “dry and unpretentious wit” by Eoin Murray of the Quietus/DJ Mag. His most
recent work has been released on Amalgam Records (US), Miúin (Irl), Destiny Trax (US),
The Department of Energy (Irl) and Moot Records (Irl).
