If you have previously completed the Intermediate Hiking for Fitness Program or can hike 8.5 miles with at least 2,000ft of elevation, this hike is for you! We strongly recommend completion of the shorter version of the Bald Mt. hike (in and out via Bald Mountain Trail) as a pre-requisite. This outing is not for children under 18 years old.
This hike will be a point-to-point hike via Gunsight Rock (8.5 miles with 1,900 ft elevation gain). We will meet at Sugarloaf's Goodspeed parking lot on Adobe Canyon Rd, where we will leave enough cars to shuttle ourselves back once we finish the hike. From there, we will carpool to Hood Mountain Regional Park's Pythian Rd entrance, where we will begin our hike on Lower Johnson Ridge Trail to the Mount Hood summit, detouring to Gunsight Rock for 5 minutes, and returning to Sugarloaf on Nattkemper/Goodspeed Trails. Nattkemper turns into Goodspeed Trail at the Sugarloaf Ridge SP boundary. There is a major water crossing on Goodspeed trail that by June is likely to have receded considerably. The trail ends at the Goodspeed lot on Adobe Canyon Rd, where we will carpool back to the cars left at Pythian.
This event is free (donations are encouraged) but requires RSVP. Wear appropriate footwear for rocky/slippery trails and layers. Be prepared for one slippery major crossing; we strongly recommend bringing water shoes, hiking poles, and an additional pair of socks. Bring your lunch, at least half a gallon (64oz) of water, and sun protection. Please note there is no water or bathroom access (except at the Pythian Rd parking lot), cell phone coverage (except in some spots along the ridge), or emergency services during this outing. Heavy rains cancel.
Ease of access: The hiking route will be mostly a single-track trail, with steep switchbacks in some places and at least 60% sun exposure.
