Visit the Unique Habitat of the Vernal Pools

Description: Tucked away northwest of the town of Glen Ellen is a unique gem of a property. Last year we visited the Vernal Pools when they were dry. This year we are planning to go while they still have water in them. Sonoma Land Trust (SLT) purchased the 174-acre parcel of land to protect its rare Vernal Pools and to continue stitching together a series of properties that will protect the Wildlife Corridor running from Lake Berryessa across Sonoma Mountain and on to the Coast.

We will be visiting the pools during what may be the peak of the aquatic bloom. We will hike through mature oak woodlands, virgin grasslands, and a section of Yulupa Creek in this open space on the north side of Sonoma Mountain.

Logistics: There are no trails, but the terrain is mostly gentle, with subtle rises and dips through the lower slopes of Sonoma Mountain. It is advised to wear good hiking shoes/boots, long pants and gaiters or socks you can tuck your pants into. Bring water, binoculars, a phone/camera, walking sticks, a hat, and a snack.

Directions: We will meet at 10:00 am at the southern parking lot at Jack London Village just south of the town of Glen Ellen. SLT will have a van that carries nine, but the rest of us need to carpool from the parking lot, due to limited parking on site.
