Jennifer Mapes, Kent State Geography professor, will discuss her recently-published book, The New American Small Town, at Tap Talks on August 19, 2025.
According to Mapes, “I write a lot about Kent in my book. When I got here, they were wrapping up a large downtown mixed-use revitalization project. That was 13 years ago. Today, the city’s downtown is thriving. There’s a lot of praise to go around, but I think the most important piece was that the city and the university recognized that they needed to build this together. One big project, leveraging the assets of both entities, along with public and private funding.”
Mapes, who is a skilled cartographer, was instrumental in creating the May 4, 1970 exhibit at Kent Historical Society and Museum. The exhibit combines oral histories and maps to explore the human experience, highlighting shared humanity and the lasting impact of the event.
Tap Talks are sponsored by Kent Historical Society and scheduled monthly at 7 pm at North Water Brewing, 101 Crain Avenue in Kent.
Don Schjeldahl, the creator of North Water Brewing, initiated Tap Talks as a way to bring the community together for conversation about life in Kent, Kent’s history, and issues of the day that impact us all. It’s also a chance to enjoy an array of locally-brewed artisan ales and beers.
Those who attend will have an opportunity to meet Jen Mapes and learn more about the amazing town we share and call home.
