Celebrate Mayday with a guided nature hike to explore local plant life, forage for dewberries, and learn the art of preserving nature’s bounty! This hands-on program combines outdoor berry picking fun with practical skills of learning to make Dewberry Preserves, offering participants a memorable experience and a taste of homemade goodness.
Schedule of Activities:
9:00 AM – Welcome & Introduction
• Brief overview of the event.
• Safety tips for berry picking.
• Dewberry identification and responsible foraging practices.
9:15 AM – Guided Nature Hike
• A leisurely hike to locate dewberries along park trails.
• Fun facts shared by the guide, such as the role of dewberries in local ecosystems and how they attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
10:30 AM – Berry Preserves Workshop
• A demonstration of how to turn freshly picked dewberries into preserves.
• Interactive session where participants can crush berries, measure ingredients, and jar their own mini batch to take home.
• Tips on preserving berries without added sugar for a healthier option.
11:30 AM – Fun Giveaway & Closing
• Each participant receives a small jar of pre-made dewberry jam (in case their own needs more time to set).
• Giveaway: Berry baskets stamped with “Forest Foraging with Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park – 2025” for future foraging adventures.
