Conversing with the Landscape (FULL)

Situated on a serene hilltop high above the Ausable River, Sand River Community Farm is an experiment in neighborly farming and feeding. Here, all food and events are offered as a gift, with no barrier to access. The farm’s ethos is “This food is offered as a gift to anyone who is hungry for any reason.” Sand River is concerned with feeding not only its human neighbors, but the soils, plants, and animals that call this historic farmstead home. The farm’s human history as the well-known farm of the Adgate-Schermerhorn family offers us a lens into how the past informs our present in the Champlain Valley’s rich agricultural landscapes. Its vegetables, grasses, sheep, cattle, and other non-human life comprise the multi-dimensional landscape here. Through this experience, we will explore the homestead beyond its architectural history as we converse with each other and the surrounding landscape. We will tour the farm, learn more about Sand River’s mission, and gather for a simple lunch of food from the farm, offered as a gift. After lunch, participants will be invited to join in the regular care and maintenance of the buildings and gardens that allow food to continue flowing outward into the community.

This outing is led by Sand River Community Farm’s Adam Wilson and AARCH’s former Executive Director, Steven Engelhart.
