Chairs, chairs everywhere and not a place to sit? Then this is the class for you! Pressed cane, hand cane, sheet cane, fiber splint, fiber rush, pretwisted natural rush; chair seat materials are numerous and can be confusing until you know the difference and what type of material goes on what type of chair.
In this 3 part series of workshops we will focus on different type of seat in each session. Take individual sessions or the whole series for a 10% discount.
Session 1: Hand cane. All students will work on a wooden footstool frame and learn the traditional 7 step method that can be used on full sized chairs. Footstool frame, caning pegs and cane will be provided.Saturday March 14; Sunday March 15, 2025, 1-4
Session 2: Pressed Cane; this class will focus on using prewoven sheet cane. The first day will be the proper way to remove old cane, how to determine the correct size for the spline, and preparing the groove for the new seat. Caning wedges, cane and spline will be provided. Students should bring a one inch chisel and a ¼ inch chisel and an old bath towel. Saturday April 18; Sunday April 19, 2026 1-4 both days.
Session 3: Porch chair weave. Traditionally used on porch rockers, this method is also popular for kitchen ladderback chairs and uses the largest size of cane that is made. Students should bring a suitable chair, old towel, 2 inch or larger spring clamps. This type of cane can be slightly rougher than smaller sizes so you may want to work with snug fitting gloves. Saturday May 9, 2026 10am to 4pm.
