“Establishment and early years of the Industrial School of Kearney, Nebraska”
The State Industrial School in Kearney, Nebraska, founded in 1881 as the State Reform School, aimed to rehabilitate juvenile offenders through education and industrial training. Renamed in 1887, it offered instruction in trades like carpentry, tailoring, and agriculture to help boys become productive citizens. Today, it operates as the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center–Kearney. Join us on September 12th for an insightful presentation by longtime YRTC staff member Robin Smith, as he explores the founding and early years of Kearney’s Industrial School. With over 40 years of experience with YRTC, Robin brings a unique and personal perspective to this important chapter in local history.
