Q: What is Blue Mountains Toastmasters?
A: It's a local friendly neighbourhood club that helps members improve public speaking skills.
Q: What’s the purpose of the Club, the Meetup group and the ‘Toastmasters Program’?
A: 75% of the population fear public speaking, despite being the most essential skill to have! We communicate / influence / persuade on an everyday basis - to families, friends, coworkers, bosses, employees, clients, crowds… even at wedding, funerals and other important life events! But most of us suck at it! Many of us fail to deliver a message confidently, or weave a story in a creative captivating way, or speak coherently and effectively. Most people have stage fright, anxiety with unknown crowds, feeling of unpreparedness etc.. when put in front of a group! And most of us think “we are not built for it”, which is untrue and very misleading. Because Public speaking is a muscle memory. It’s a skill one can develop! And that is why and how the “Toastmasters Organisation” came into existence. It was founded in the USA to help people build confidence in public speaking and general communication. And therefore as a local club, we follow the Toastmasters’ program to help us become
better speakers. Our club’s purpose is to empower new members become better at speeches, by providing them the guided program, course and a safe environment to test and flex their speaking skills.
Q: Is there a program you follow?
A: Yes. We follow a curriculum set by an international not-for-profit body called
https://www.toastmasters.org/ which includes customised courses tailored to each of person’s speaking journey and needs.
Q: Is there a fee? What does it include.
A: Yes. In order to become a full time ‘Member’ you need to pay a small semi annual fees (details on the website). Once you do, you get to unlock the program that includes course and materials called the ‘Pathways’. It’s got some great content and comes with a plan tailored to improving your speaking needs. You even get access to mentors, who are experienced speakers themselves that help you out in your speaking journey. You get to participate in speeches during our Meetups, improve your skills, receive feedback etc.. you even get to participate in public speaking competitions at the club level, district or even international level!
Q. Do I have to pay to visit?
A. No. It’s free for guests. Anyone is welcome to visit for a few sessions (say 2-3 times) if you just want to observe, learn and understand if this is fit for you or not
