Paper Weaving with Sally Paul

The Artspace is pleased to offer The Big Draw, a fun afternoon of art activities designed for audiences of all ages. Each session offers participants high-level instruction from local artists, opportunities for informal interaction and exchange, and a shared learning experience. The Big Draw sessions are free, and all materials are provided. Children under age 14 should be accompanied by an adult.

In her hands-on paper weaving workshop, Sally Paul will share some 19th century examples of paper weaving from the American Folk Art Museum, where she worked as an educator, as well as two of her works included in the Flatfile exhibition that incorporate woven paper. After introducing some simple weaving patterns, participants will have the chance to make a woven work with precut paper warps and colored strips that function as the weft. This program is appropriate for adults and children ages 5 and up.

About the Artist: Sally Paul (b.1974 Philadelphia) is an artist, educator, and curator based in Kansas City, MO. Sally makes object-like paintings depicting lively grids that are an unlikely marriage between geometric abstraction and craft. Inspired in part by American textiles made in the 19th and 20th centuries, the work is rooted in the history of female-driven abstraction, while exploring new ground through material exploration. Paul has exhibited at Barley Fair, 57W57, Shelter, Essex Flowers, My Pet Ram, and The Arsenal Gallery in New York City, as well as at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, The Kansas City Public Library, PLUG, The EKRU Project, and Holsum Gallery in Kansas City. As a museum educator, she has taught at the Museum of Modern Art, The American Folk Art Museum, International Center of Photography, and The Bronx Museum. She has organized curatorial projects at the Cullman Education Center Gallery at the Museum of Modern Art and at Troost Gardens, an artist-run gallery that she co-founded in 2020. Paul received a BFA from Pratt Institute and MA in art education from New York University. She was a 2022-2024 visual art resident at the Charlotte Street Foundation. Sally is currently an adjunct professor at Metropolitan Community College at Longview in Kansas City.
