CHESS TOURNAMENT RULES
Please be on time. All students are placed into the tournament electronically. If you arrive after the tournament starts, you must wait until the following round to play. Not participating in all rounds will alter your standings.
Rules for Swiss Tournament:
1. Turn off all cell phones.
2. It is important to sit in the correct spot. An official game will not calculate the individual games correctly if you sit in the wrong spot. This results in ALL scores for everyone being skewed. Please pay attention to seating assignment.
3. Prior to the round starting, the opponent playing on the black side selects whether the clock sits on the right or left side.
4. Do not start a game until told to start. Everyone shakes his/her opponent’s hand, introduces themselves, and begins the game at the same time. Opponent playing on the black side will start the clock.
5. Once we start a round, no talking is allowed. When you finish the game, move at least 100 feet away before having a conversation.
6. Once you touch a chess piece, you must move it. Once you remove your hand, the chess piece must remain in place. There is one exception. Please see Rule #14.
7. Touch clock with the same hand used to move your chess piece.
8. You are not required to wait for the other opponent to “hit the clock” to make your next move. Once your opponent completes his/her move, you are allowed to move.
9. Draw by 3 move repetition. Making the exact same move 3 times in a row will elicit a draw/tie.
10. If a piece needs to be adjusted, you must say “adjust” BEFORE adjusting a piece on the board. This lets the opponent know you do not intend to touch to move.
11. Swiss tie breaker is determined by who played and won more games using black pieces.
12. You and your opponent are responsible for monitoring the clock. Once the time goes to zero, the other player automatically wins.
13. Do not change the time on the clock once the game starts. Raise your hand if there is an issue.
14. You are not responsible to tell your opponent he or she is in check or checkmate. It is a courtesy though, and I hope you and your opponent still extend it to each other. If your opponent makes an illegal move, then you must inform him or her they are in check or checkmate. The opponent is not required to move the chess piece originally touched. The opponent has the option to move another chess piece.
15. Players may resign or in other cases, draw by mutual agreement
16. The winner of the game raises his/her hand notifying us they won the game. If it is a tie/draw, both players raise one hand. Once you receive a thumbs up from an adult, quietly reset board and clock. Move to the alternate location until the next round.
