Simulation-Driven Design and Data-Driven Engineering in Naval Architecture

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of simulation-driven design (SDD) and data-driven engineering (DDE) methodologies as applied to modern naval architecture. It demonstrates how parametric modelling, high-fidelity CFD simulations, towing-tank experiments, and formal optimization can be combined into an integrated design process, illustrated through industrial and research case studies ranging from high-speed craft to large commercial vessels. Building on this foundation, the presentation introduces holistic design synthesis, surrogate modelling, and machine-learning-based reduced-order models to enable multi-disciplinary and multi-objective optimization at scale. The results highlight significant performance improvements, robust decision support, and the potential of SDD and DDE to accelerate innovation toward more efficient and sustainable ship designs.
