Synopsis:
NOISES OFF is a riotous backstage comedy that pulls back the curtain on what really goes on behind the scenes of a theatre production. A second-rate acting troupe is trying — and failing — to hold together a terrible British farce called NOTHING ON. During rehearsals, lines are forgotten, doors won’t open (or won’t stay shut), and props keep disappearing. By the time we see the show from backstage, the actors are tangled in romantic rivalries, petty feuds, and total chaos — all while trying to pretend everything is perfectly normal out front. It’s a fast-paced, door-slamming, laugh-out-loud mess in the best possible way!
Character breakdown:
Dotty Otley / Mrs. Clackett
Age range: 50s–70s
A veteran actress, financially backing the play. She plays the housekeeper Mrs. Clackett in Nothing On. Often confused on stage, especially with props (like sardines). Flustered but well-meaning.
Lloyd Dallas
Age range: 40s–60s
The temperamental, sarcastic director of the play. He’s juggling romantic entanglements with both Brooke and Poppy, and he is constantly on the verge of a breakdown.
Garry Lejeune / Roger Tramplemain
Age range: 30s–40s
A well-meaning actor who’s overly confident but easily rattled. Frequently starts sentences he doesn’t finish. Playing the estate agent Roger. Jealous and easily flustered offstage.
Brooke Ashton / Vicki
Age range: 20s–30s
A young, attractive, and somewhat clueless actress. She often loses her contact lenses and her focus. She’s playing the saucy secretary Vicki in Nothing On and has a thing for Lloyd.
Frederick Fellowes / Philip Brent / Sheikh
Age range: 30s–50s
A sweet, slightly dim actor prone to nosebleeds and fainting at the mention of violence. Plays Philip (a man hiding from the taxman) and the Sheikh in Nothing On.
Belinda Blair / Flavia Brent
Age range: 30s–50s
A sensible, cheerful actress who tries to keep the group together. She plays the posh Flavia in Nothing On. Loves gossip and acting as the peacemaker.
Selsdon Mowbray / Burglar
Age range: 60s–80s
An elderly, hard-of-hearing actor with a drinking problem. Plays the burglar in Nothing On. The company is always trying to keep him away from the booze and on the stage.
Poppy Norton-Taylor
Age range: 20s–30s
The assistant stage manager. Nervous, sweet, and overworked. She’s secretly in love with Lloyd and gets caught up in the backstage chaos.
Tim Allgood
Age range: 20s–30s
The overworked stage manager and understudy for everyone. Exhausted, sleep-deprived, and trying desperately to hold the show together.
