About the event
Reza Khota Quartet
This ensemble is rooted in an 18-year-long musical collaboration between Reza Khota, Shane Cooper, and Jonno Sweetman. They have played together in various formations of Khota’s projects and other bands, with the longest-standing arrangement being the quartet that includes saxophonist Buddy Wells. The quartet released their debut album, Transmutation, in 2013, followed by Liminal in 2018.
The music they create explores the shared sonic spaces between jazz, rock, afrobeat, ethio-jazz, and genres that defy classification. At the heart of this collaboration is a profound understanding of how to generate sound together, focusing on both emotional resonance and temporal aspects. Their orchestration reflects an awareness of the sonic characteristics and potential of the instruments and musicians involved.
This tour reunites the original band with support from Concerts SA’s mobility grant. In addition to selections from their most recent album, the band will present some new compositions, including a tribute to Thomas Mapfumo and a piece titled Resilience (Sumud), dedicated to Palestinians and, by extension, to all who are suffering under the exploitative regimes of neocolonialism.
