“Chris du Plessis's Murder Ballads last night at the Ampie Theatre in Wellington was a treat and a tonic. It was a home-cooked mix of sit-down comedy full of self-mockery and surprising settings that breathed new life into old poems. Chris's perspectives on the work of Leipoldt, DF Malherbe, ID du Plessis, Opperman and especially Van Wyk Louw make you think again about things you think you know. He makes words that you have already filed away as old-fashioned, wild again. There were also a few settings of anonymous poems from the late 1800s that I was not familiar with at all, but worked wonderfully in the talking blues tradition. Chris is doing the show again tonight at The Alma Cafe. Go if you can!”
