Jefferson, TX — This October, history takes a darker turn at Captain’s Castle Inn. The 1840s historic landmark, long tied to Jefferson’s riverport legacy, will open its doors for a one-of-a-kind haunted experience: The Castle & Caskets: The Black Veil of Jefferson.

Unlike a traditional haunted house filled with masks and jump-scares, The Black Veil of Jefferson invites guests into a fully immersive, small-group tour through the Castle’s shadowed rooms. Each space tells a story pulled from Jefferson’s past — brothels and gamblers, sorrowful nurseries, funerals and mourning parlors, suicides, séances, enslaved voices, and even echoes of Jefferson’s steamboat tragedies.

Explore 14 chilling rooms and hallways as guides lead guests by lantern light as actors embody the spirits and secrets of the Castle’s history. The result is an eerie, atmospheric experience where fact and folklore blur, and “the past is never buried.”

“This isn’t a carnival attraction,” says owner Sandi Jones. “It’s Jefferson’s history brought to life — eerie, authentic, and unforgettable. The Castle already carries its own spirits and scars. We’re just giving them a voice.”

• Times: Tours begin at 8:00 PM and continue throughout the evening. Onsite ticket sales open at 7:30 PM if space remains.

Captain’s Castle Inn (formerly the Rogers-McCasland House) is one of Jefferson’s most iconic historic homes. Built in the 1840s, it has served as a residence, hotel, and community gathering place — and now as a living history inn. With a legacy steeped in Jefferson’s riverport era, Civil War history, and local lore, the Castle is a treasure of East Texas heritage.

Costumes encouraged—whether sultry, spooky, or a touch of both.
