About the event

Young Archaeological Scientists Summer School
Why not come and join us for a very different kind of holiday club, for kids aged 8-12 years who love learning through doing and who don't mind getting their hands a bit dirty?

Our young archaeological scientists will get a close up look at what you can learn from what’s in the ground below us, using material from the museum and a REAL excavation. Guided by our archaeologists, kids will get stuck into some exciting experiments, reconstruction work and the handling of real ancient objects.

This is a summer school for the kid who learns differently, the kid who doesn't enjoy learning sitting in a classroom, but for who digging up our history first-hand could unlock a passion for the past. An opportunity to make new friends, develop new skills and learn lots of cool information to wow history teachers with come September.

Each week comprises of 3 sessions, which run on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10AM to 12:30 PM.

There will also be an event on the 23rd of August for loved ones to attend to see what their child has learned over the course of the Summer School.

Pricing
£30 per week or £120 for all 5 weeks
(No annual pass required)

[For those eligible for the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme through South Tyneside Council, some places on the Summer School are available through Plinth ( https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/MgGR6CZlQFbWCmAUe7ZO). Sessions booked through HAF will run until 2:30 PM and include lunch.]

Week 1 – 23rd, 24th and 25th July
This group will get to take a deep dive into our museum with archaeologist Corey, exploring our displays and collections, including handling both replicas and real objects. They’ll discover the stories objects can tell us and gain valuable research skills along the way.

Week 2 – 30th, 31st July and 1st August
This group will learn archaeological excavation techniques prior to the beginning of our excavation. They will learn how to use different tools such as trowels and spades and the basics of an archaeological excavation. NOTE: Attending these sessions is a prerequisite of being able to join our later sessions at the excavation.

Week 3 – 6th, 7th and 8th August
Week 4 – 13th, 14th and 15th August
Week 5 – 20th, 21st and 22nd August
In these weeks the group will engage in a real archaeological investigation, putting into practice what they’ve learned up to this point. This will include dig techniques, learning about what happens with objects after they have been excavated, and how information we find during excavations is recorded.

NOTE: Those wishing to attend Weeks 3, 4 and 5 must have attended Week 2.
