And this is the “root of the story”
Kacie’s oldest son is the inspiration for the character, Spud. He adopted this nickname as a result of his father’s childhood nickname, Tater. As Kacie’s family grew with a new little "Tot," things got hectic in the Hanna Household.
Dena's 30 years experience as a kindergarten teacher paired with Kacie's creative background led to the creation of @PotatoSackPlay, an online platform that showcases diverse, themed activities to keep little ones engaged through reading and purposeful play. As their conversations around Potato Sack Play evolved, Dena's lifelong dream of writing a children’s book started to take shape. The duo began to develop the character Spud and the story that now comes alive in this book.
Family roots run deep in this story. “Greenfield Farm” is named after the street that Dena grew up on and where Kacie spent much of her time visiting with her grandparents. The grapevine and the gnome (playfully hidden throughout the book) were beloved features of the backyard at that house. Also included is Tot, Spud’s little brother. The authors plan to develop a series of adventure stories for the two brothers to enjoy.
Spud, in real life, is a spunky, smart, loving child who is loved for just being himself. In today's world, there are many external influences that can skew our sense of self-worth. This story delivers the message that no matter what, you are important and needed just the way you are, and that kindness will always stand out.
After story time, our wildflowers will create their very own “spud”, which will be potato shaped paper cut out that they will decorate with eyes, hair, face, clothes, etc!
