About the film:
First of its kind independent film made in Kashmiri language.
About the film:
In the heart of a bustling city of Jammu, far from their ancestral homeland, Kashmir, a Kashmiri Pandit family juggles the complexities of modern life while caring for an elderly grandfather who struggles with a memory condition. Following the recent passing of his beloved wife, the grandfather is overwhelmed by a profound sense of void. For him, Kashmir has come to symbolise his late wife in his subconscious mind-a place that now represents the emotional connection he yearns to reclaim. Once indifferent to the idea of returning to Kashmir, the grandfather's grief transforms this distant notion into an urgent quest. His fixation on the journey is driven not by a desire to fulfil his wife's dreams, but by a symbolic need to bridge the emotional gap left by her absence. Additionally, he feels a deep need to reconnect with his roots and update himself on the current conditions of the Kashmiri Pandit community, who were displaced in the 1990s. Despite his repeated reminders about the trip and his memory lapses, his family manages the situation with a blend of patience, understanding, and humour. Their interactions, infused with the warmth and wit characteristic of Kashmiri Pandit culture, help them navigate this challenging emotional journey together. The family's eventual trip to Kashmir becomes a meaningful exploration of the grandfather's grief and longing, as well as an opportunity to understand and report on the current state of their displaced community. The journey is less about fulfilling a specific wish and more about addressing the grandfather's symbolic quest for emotional closure and reconnecting with their cultural heritage. "Battkoch" -meaning "Lane of Kashmiri Pandits" - captures the essence of a family's emotional journey and cultural roots. Through heartfelt moments and lighthearted humour, the film showcases their resilience and the powerful connection to their ancestral homeland, while also shedding light on the evolving conditions of the Kashmiri Pandit community.
