We’re incredibly excited to welcome Ken Ramirez back to Australia for a three-day deep dive into how animals learn, think, and communicate—led by one of the most respected voices in the field of animal training and behaviour science.
Whether you’re working with dogs, exotic species, or wildlife, this workshop will give you tools to take your training to the next level—ethically, effectively, and with true connection at the heart of it all.
🧠 What You’ll Learn – Expanded Topics
📌 Day 1 – Foundations of Concept Training
🦴 Using Non-Food Reinforcers Effectively
Learn how to expand your reinforcement toolkit beyond food. Ken explores how to use toys, play, praise, and life rewards in systematic, science-based ways that build stronger, more motivated behaviours—without frustration or confusion.
🔁 Introduction to Concept Training
Explore foundational skills needed to teach animals to think conceptually. Start with Match-to-Sample—a simple but powerful task that unlocks the animal's ability to generalise and compare.
🧭 Modifier Cues
Teach animals how to respond to complex instructions like “go to the small ball” or “jump over the red cone.” This is one of Ken’s most practical conceptual training tools, allowing animals to understand left/right, big/small, under/over, soft/hard, and more.
📌 Day 2 – Expanding Thinking & Choice
🙅 Teaching an Animal to Say “No”
Yes, really. Ken will show you how to give animals a voice—and the ability to opt out when needed. Learn how this builds trust, improves motivation, and resolves problematic training situations.
🙋 Imitation
Explore how to teach one animal to imitate the behaviour of another—a fascinating look into observational learning. Ken compares his protocol to Claudia Fugazza’s Do As I Do method and reveals training steps and challenges along the way.
➕ Adduction (Part 1)
Begin learning how to combine cues to create new behaviours on the fly. Adduction is one of the most advanced and rarely taught conceptual skills in animal training.
📌 Day 3 – Advanced Concepts & Big Picture Thinking
➕ Adduction (Part 2)
Continue building on Day 2 to create complex, intelligent behaviours from previously trained cues. This is the next level of creative animal learning.
🔢 Quantity Recognition
Yes, Ken taught dogs to count. And not just a little—he took it to the level of research. Learn how the project evolved, what it revealed about cognition in dogs, and how this might shape our understanding of animals' ability to perceive numbers and amounts.
🌏 Conservation Training
See how advanced training is being used around the world to contribute to conservation efforts. From condors to dolphins to sea turtles, Ken shares inspiring real-life stories of how animal training is making a difference in wild populations and how pet trainers can learn from it.
🎓 Who Is This Workshop For?
✔️ Dog trainers
✔️ Animal behaviour consultants
✔️ Zookeepers & wildlife trainers
✔️ Animal science students
✔️ Anyone passionate about ethical, thoughtful animal training
🐾 Live Demonstrations
Some early-stage training will be shown using dogs to illustrate the foundations of concept training. More advanced behaviours will be demonstrated via video and case studies.
