About the event

LAND & HEART: LOCAL FOOD SHORTS
A Community Collaborations Event sponsored by Barb McFadden and Tom Rocklin

Presented in partnership with Johnson County Food Policy Council and Thriving Communities.

Come learn about how farming is more than corn and beans with a diverse and thoughtfully curated program of documentary shorts featuring local and nationwide farmers and small-scale food businesses. Stay afterwards for a panel dialogue and potluck of locally grown food!

The purpose of Johnson County Food Policy Council is to improve dialogue and discussion and provide advice on food and agriculture issues to the county, municipalities, community boards, local agencies, nongovernmental organizations, businesses, and other interested groups. The Council will address food system issues in the county, including the development of the Council’s Governing Principles and strategic goals, data-gathering, research projects, and policies to address food system issues.

Founded in 2012, Thriving Communities is a catalyst for positive change, leveraging storytelling and film to highlight and inspire community resilience and innovation. We spotlight stories of hope and triumph, facilitating discussions and gatherings that drive action and foster sustainable futures.

Program:

Rising Rooted & Resilient

In Detroit's North End, food sovereignty isn't just an idea-- it's growing seven acres strong. Journey inside the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network (DBCFSN), where farming isn't just about feeding people; it's about nurturing independence.

Nourishing Soil, People, and Community

Step into a world where agriculture is not just about growing food, but about nurturing life-- from the soil to the people who walk on it. The Organic Farm School offers a fresh lens on regenerative agriculture, emphasizing its vital role in reconnecting communities to their food sources. This film prepares you for a captivating journey into a sustainable future, where the act of farming becomes a symbiotic relationship with the Earth, benefiting not only our food supply but also our collective well-being. Get ready to be inspired by a way of life that shows us how human existence can be harmonious with the natural world.
