How do we build something beautiful, useful, and radical, out of what others might throw away?
Inspired by How To Build a Library (2025, dir. Maia Lekow & Christopher King), this sustainable zine-making workshop invites you to dig into the possibilities of scrap, story, and solidarity.
The film follows two Kenyan women as they transform a forgotten, junk-filled library in Nairobi into a vibrant hub for citizens. In the same creative spirit, we’ll use exclusively repurposed materials to collage zines that reflect our hopes for a better world.
You do not need to have seen the film to participate. This event is open to all experience levels, and all materials will be provided. Let’s imagine a real utopia – one page at a time!
Why zines, and why now?
In the spirit of this year’s theme, our zine workshop asks:
- how can small, local acts of creativity point toward larger-scale change?
- how do we reclaim materials, space, and stories to create something hopeful?
- what power do zines hold in individually and collectively creating our real utopia?
Come and find out, get hands-on in your creative learning experience, and leave with your own zine!
