About the event

Next Chapter: Women Coming Out Later in Life
A peer-support group for women who are curious, questioning or transitioning to a new sexual identity later in life.

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery and authenticity is both empowering and challenging, especially when embracing one's true sexual orientation later in life. Our bi-weekly support group offers a compassionate and confidential space for all women—whether you've already come out as queer, are questioning your sexuality, or feel confined in a heterosexual relationship. At Femme Community Space, we come together to share experiences, navigate complex emotions, and support one another in embracing our authentic selves.
What to Expect in Each Session:
- Welcome and Introductions: Each session begins with a warm welcome from our facilitator, Amanda Channer. Participants are invited to introduce themselves, sharing as much or as little as they feel comfortable. This fosters a sense of community and belonging.
- Establishing Group Agreements: To create a safe and respectful environment, we collaboratively establish group agreements. These may include guidelines on confidentiality, respectful listening, and the importance of allowing everyone the opportunity to share.
- Check-In: Members are encouraged to share their current feelings, experiences, or any significant events since the last meeting. This segment allows participants to express themselves and receive immediate support from the group.
- Themed Discussions: Each session focuses on specific themes relevant to our journeys, such as:
-Navigating personal identity and self-acceptance
-Managing relationships with family, friends, and partners
-Coping with societal perceptions and internalized beliefs
-Exploring the intersectionality of culture, ethnicity, and sexuality These discussions provide insight and collective wisdom, helping members feel understood and supported.
- Skill-Building Activities: We incorporate activities designed to empower and equip participants with tools to navigate their journeys, such as:
-Mindfulness and grounding exercises to manage stress and enhance self-awareness
-Role-playing scenarios to practice communication and boundary-setting
-Creative expression through art or writing to explore emotions and identity
- Resource Sharing: Amanda and group members share resources, including literature, community events, and support services, to assist in personal growth and community connection.
- Open Sharing: Time is allocated for participants to discuss any pressing issues or seek advice on specific situations. This open forum encourages peer support and collective problem-solving.
- Closing and Reflection: We conclude with reflections on the session, allowing members to share takeaways or set intentions for the coming weeks. This reinforces learning and fosters a sense of continuity.
Facilitator Background:
Each session is led by Amanda Channer, a peer mentor and Social Service Worker. Amanda is a mother, a First Nations Woman, and a community advocate. Amanda came out at the age of 35 after leaving an abusive relationship that almost took her life, and feels called to support women coming out later in life as they navigate the challenges and beauty of creating a new identity in this phase of life.
Session Details:
- Frequency: Bi-weekly
