UIndy Young Hoosier State Piano Competition

The UIndy Young Hoosier State Piano Competition (UYHSPC) is a longstanding competition for pianists ages 5-19 founded by Piano Solutions and celebrating the talented pianists of the state of Indiana. Students register for one or more categories in their age division and perform in preliminary rounds in June at one of three regional sites; Columbus, Lafayette, or Carmel. Students with a minimum regional score are invited to final rounds at the University of Indianapolis in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center the first two weekends of August. Winners are announced following the finals event with every student receiving a ribbon and winners earning plaques. All dates will be hosted at the University of Indianapolis Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indpls., IN 46227

1. All registration is online.

2. All entrants must be legal residents of the state of Indiana from May 15-August 30.

3. All communication is by email. You will receive your audition time a few days after the

final entry deadline.

4. All pianists must audition in person. No recorded auditions will be accepted.

5. All pieces performed must meet category requirements.

6. Entrants may NOT perform the same piece of music in more than one category.

7. Maximum performance time for Primary and Elementary is 5 minutes. Maximum

performance time for Middle School and High School is 8 minutes. If you exceed the

maximum time you may be stopped by the judges.

8. There is no minimum time limit but your piece must be at least 16 measures long without

repeats. Pieces must be played without cuts. No notes may be edited out.

9. All of a contestant's categories must be performed on the same day. In the Ensemble category we may make an exception if members of an ensemble are not siblings.

10. Memorization is not required in the Preliminary auditions.

11. Provide one original score for the judges. If you have printed music from the internet include documentation of the free website or proof of purchase. No copied music is allowed unless your piece is permanently out of print or in the public domain.

12. Photocopying of music at the audition sites is not permitted.

13. Measures MUST be clearly numbered. This regulation must be followed in order for the

student to advance to the final round.

14. Registration table opens 30 minutes prior to the start of auditions. You must check-in and verify your mailing address, email address and phone number.

15. NO parents or teachers are allowed at the judges table or the performance piano. (The

ONLY exception to this rule is if a parent serves as a page turner for an ensemble.)

This regulation must be obeyed in order for the student to advance to the Final round.

Students should NOT approach the judges table until their name is called.

16. Please wear performance attire. Shorts, flip-flop shoes, sports outfits are not considered appropriate attire for a piano competition. NO props or costumes are allowed.

17. Ensembles may have a page turner provided the turner stands to the left of the second player. Each ensemble player MUST register in their own age category. If participants are not in the same age category, they will compete in the age category of the oldest member of the ensemble

18. There will be two judges. Each judge can score 1-10 in five categories which Technique, Musicianship/ Interpretation and Other Factors which include stage presence. Each judge may score a maximum of 50 points. You must have a combined score of 90 to advance to the final round at the University of Indianapolis in August. Fractions will not be rounded up.

19. The Preliminary and Finals auditions are open to the public at no charge.

20. You may video and take pictures of your child.
