Habitat Build: Save the Date!
Saturday, August 9 @ Meridian Street UMC
Meridian Street is sponsoring and hosting a home-building event in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, made possible by a grant from Meridian Street’s endowment fund and our loyal giving to the church.
On the morning of August 9th, in our church’s parking lot, two shifts of volunteers will assemble the walls for this home, both exterior and interior. To accomplish this task, we'll need at least 60+ volunteers (the minimum age is 16 for the construction stations). In addition, we'll need some volunteers to assist with the check-in station and hospitality. There is something for everybody to do that day. All tools, materials, and PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, and nail aprons, along with expert guidance, will be provided by Habitat for Humanity.
Think this is outside your skill level? Nope! The lumber has been pre-cut, marked, and pre-drilled to “mistake-proof” our work. Habitat “Tiger” volunteers will be assisting at each nailing station. As each wall is completed, it will be assembled with other walls to create the home's framework, with a group photo taken in between shifts.
Housing Justice (working towards decent and affordable housing for all in our city) has been a high community outreach priority for many years at Meridian Street. This is an excellent opportunity for our church – and you – to partner with Habitat for Humanity towards our common goal of decent and affordable housing for all. Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity will build close to 40 homes in the metro area this year. Homebuyers take classes and put in their sweat equity working on numerous Habitat homes. This, in combination with proven financial stability, helps these future homeowners qualify for a shot at a decent home and a Habitat mortgage – yes, they pay a mortgage, just like the rest of us. What makes that mortgage affordable is the 0% interest, thanks in large part to sponsorships by area businesses, private organizations, and churches like Meridian Street. Thanks to your generous giving over the years, our church’s endowment fund is able to help sponsor this new home for a deserving family.
Millard Fuller and Clarence Jordan started Habitat for Humanity in 1976 in the state of Georgia, proving out the concept of partnership housing -- first in Africa, then in the United States -- and now in multiple countries around the world. Former President Jimmy Carter famously became involved with Habitat after leaving office. He found it extremely rewarding to his soul, as I have, and I firmly believe you will, as well.
This is a great opportunity for Meridian Street. 60+ volunteers for this event is a tall task, but I am confident we can do this. Please earnestly pray about this opportunity over the next few days, and I hope the Holy Spirit leads you to volunteer. Watch for a registration link that will be sent out soon.
Together, we can do this!! Thank you! ~ Phil McAlister
