The time is medieval France in the county of Carcassonne, surrounding a fortified city first settled by the Romans around 100 BC. Youand your fellow nobles are trying to eek out your corner of the county by building cities, roads, monasteries and farmland.
Carcassonne is the second of the four pillars that make up the Gateway Games of the Euro-Game movement of the early 2000s. Catan, Alhambra and Ticket to Ride being the other three. Published in 2000, Carcassonne won the Spiel Des Jahres in 2001.

Carcassonne is a Medium-Light Tile Laying Euro-Style game for 2-5 players that plays in about 45 minutes. Players compete for areas of control throughout the region and points are scored for completed roads and cities and farmland. Will you focus on the long game of farmland, or will your highwaymen charge tolls on the roads? Or will your knights and monks try to control the settled areas of the county? Farms can be a huge source of points but you must take care when assigning farmers. Farmers only score at the end of the game so assigning one reduces your flexibility.
