The Hitchcock Center for Chemical Ecology Symposium is pleased to open its final presentation to the public! Join us for Dr. Jaap de Roode's talk on "Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves"!
Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences - Room 139/141
In Doctors by Nature, Jaap de Roode demonstrates how animals of all kinds—from ants to apes, from bees to bears, and from cats to caterpillars—use various forms of medicine to treat their own ailments and those of their relatives. De Roode asks whether these astonishing behaviors are learned or innate and explains how we can turn to the medical knowledge of the animal kingdom to improve agriculture, create better lives for our pets, and develop new pharmaceutical drugs.
After the talk, please join us for the HCCE Symposium Social with food trucks and a beautiful Lake Tahoe evening. Signed copies of Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves will be available for purchase for $20 each.
Jaap de Roode is Samuel Candler Dobbs professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where he studies parasites of monarch butterflies and honeybees. In addition to teaching biology to undergraduate students, Dr. de Roode is the director of the Infectious Diseases across Scales Training Program, which trains graduate students in interdisciplinary science to study and control infectious disease. He is the author of the popular-science book Doctors by Nature: How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves.
