The Workshop
Your tutor, Helen, is looking forward to meeting you and says: “This is a taster session and will lead into a whole day workshop for those of you who get hooked straight away! Design a coaster as your first ever mosaic.
This taster session will teach you the basics of cutting and sticking the glass mosaic tiles. You will start off by learning how to cut the tiles using the tile nippers provided, how much glue to use, how close together to stick the pieces and how to finish off your coaster. I will demonstrate different techniques as you work on your pieces. There will be books and photos of other mosaics for inspiration as well as my mosaics to give you ideas.
This session will lead on to a more advanced whole day of mosaic-making when you'll be invited to create a mosaic from an image of your favourite artist's work. There will also be another opportunity to make a keepsake from an old piece of precious china, turning a disaster into a positive experience and making something new and beautiful out of a broken treasured cup or plate.
I have been working in mosaic for 25 years and will be bringing some of my smaller mosaics and portfolio to show you.
All tools and materials will be provided including safety goggles so that you can enjoy the session. You will have a choice of glass and ceramic tiles to work with and some pre-cut bits for those who find it more tricky to cut the tiles.
By the end of the session, you'll have an idea of how mosaics are made and a mosaic ready to grout at home or at another workshop."

What skills are needed?
No experience is necessary. This is for complete beginners. You can practice cutting tiles (the tool is a bit like a powerful pair of scissors!) but if you find it tricky, there are pre-cut tiles for you to choose from and use.
What are the timings?
This is a relaxed afternoon running from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Our purple front door will be open from 1pm so we can welcome you in, you can get to meet Helen and your fellow crafters and grab a cuppa before you start.
How many places are available?
To ensure the quality of your personal experience, the group size is limited to 8.
What is the cost?
£37.50 + 82p card fee. This includes all the materials needed to make your mosiac and drinks and home-made biscuits during the afternoon (excluding lunch)
