Come join us in reading and discussing the mother of all revolutionary texts on the philosophy of education: Paulo Freire’s “The Pedagogy of the Oppressed”!

To encourage people of different nationalities (currently residing or passing through Iaşi) to join our meetings, discussions will be in English. Yet if you are Romanian and find the text too dense to be read in English, you can check out some Romanian books on or by Freire in our bio.
You can still take part in the meetings if you do not read the texts, but we encourage minimal acquaintance with the topic. There are plenty of online resources on Paulo Friere that you can check out.
“When education is not liberating, the dream of the oppressed is to become the oppressor.” (Paulo Freire)
A society geared for change starts in the individual minds of its citizens. But the school and university systems, the “businesses” of shaping minds, are still breeding grounds for conformity, obedience and reinforcement of the status quo. How does one revolutionize education so that it is built on authentic critical reflection? How do we create critical thinkers capable of fighting against oppressive practices? In the late 1960s, Brazilian philosopher of education Paulo Freire, influenced by marxism and postcolonialism, envisaged a “liberating” and “humanizing” alternative working model of education. His concept of “critical pedagogy” was not only groundbreaking at the time, but it continues to be eye-opening and enlightening to this day.
See you soon, rebels and revolutionaries!
