Fossil Club Members only Fossil Hunt: Cucullaea Gigantea and Skolithos in, PG County, MD.

Fossil club members have an exclusive field trip to a PG county urban stream known for its Paleocene Aquia Formation (59 – 55.6 MYA) finds.

This Fossil Club Member Marla Aron will be taking a small group from the NHSM Fossil Club to a stream in, Prince Georges County, MD to hunt for Cucullaea Gigantea and Skolithos. The Cucullaea gigantea, is a large fossil commonly called the “false ark shell” found in the Aquia Formation in MD, VA, and AL. They flourished in marine environments during the Paleocene ranging from 58.7-55.8 million years ago. Skolithos are a trace fossil of a vertical burrow found in sandstone and quartzite created by worm-like organisms that flourished from the early Cambrian to the present. This part of Maryland was once underwater, leaving mostly marine fossils behind. You are also likely to find a species of oyster, Ostrea compressirosta.
