ABOUT:
This workshop invites experienced Contact Improvisers to go beyond the familiar ingredients of CI—those physical laws of gravity, momentum, and inertia—and explore the deeper essence of the dance experience.
Steve Paxton classically described CI as a dance "based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion—gravity, momentum, inertia". This is a perfectly wonderful description to be sure but it's a bit like describing a cheesecake (the no-bake kind of course) as cream cheese, sugar, cream, biscuit crumbs and butter. These are the ingredients, but not the cake and certainly not the experience of eating it.
CI has always been the same for me. At its best it is so much more than the sum of it's ingredients.
We spend so much time on the HOW. We also have the WHERE and WHEN and WHO e.g. Monday nights 6-8pm with as many bodies we can get there. But WHAT are we doing with those 2 hours? What are WE doing? What are we DOING?
In this workshop we'll bring all our CI ingredients and tease out the what of it. We'll explore how to articulate it. How to find it and nurture it.
SUITABILITY:
This is not a class for CI beginners. You must be a regular attendee of CI Jams.

ABOUT MARTIN
Martin Hughes started learning CI in New York in the late 1980s where he was taught by some of the founders and the early “second generation” of CI practitioners. On returning to Australia in the early 90's he helped found the teaching and performing group *State of Flux* who started the Melbourne Jam and ran the first residential CI jams in Australia.
He has been lucky enough to teach CI all over Australia and elsewhere and in many different contexts. For more than 30 years Martin has found CI intriguing, exciting and fun! He enjoys nothing more than sharing that fun and excitement, and digging into the interest with others.
