Hawkins Loop Bird Fest
Guided bird and botany walks, binocular tips, food vendors, and outdoor exploration for all ages and experience levels.

About this Event

Walk the pasture and wooded trails with expert guides to learn more about birds and how to create, protect, and celebrate the natural world they depend on.

Fresh coffee, tea, specialty drinks, pastries, sandwiches and snacks are available for pre-order and on-site purchase from Pony Up Cafe and The Butcher's Daughter Market & Deli.

Whether you're a seasoned birder or just curious about nature, this event is perfect for all ages. Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect with nature and discover the diverse bird species in peak breeding season as they tend to their young.

Environmental educators from NC Bird Atlas and NC Wildlife Resources will teach beginners how to use binoculars and utilize free smartphone apps to identify birds and contribute observations to important citizen science projects. Thanks to our partner organization Field Inclusive for providing loaner binoculars and spotting scopes!

Botanists from Bottom Up Native Plants will give guided tours and tips for creating safe, healthy bird habitats in your own backyard.

Seating is available in designated observation areas to increase accessibility. Guests are welcome to bring chairs and blankets for personal use.

The event is free and open to the public. The event will be hosted rain or shine, except in case of forecasted lightning or high winds. Some vendors or activites may not be available in case of includment weather.

Registration is required. Registrants will receive all event updates via email and social media.

The Land at Hawkins Loop sits in a priority research district for the , a multi-year citizen science initiative that encourages people of all ages and experience levels to explore the outdoors and contribute observational data about the birds they see to an online database.

June is a crucial month for data collection as birds are in peak breeding season: migrating, building nests, and caring for their young.Β 

The NC Bird Atlas, along with similar databases in New York, Maryland, Puerto Rico, and Ontario, Canada will inform bird research and hundreds of conservation decisions and peer-reviewed papers, and thousands of student projects worldwide.

Info: Hawkins Loop offers more than 63 acres of pasture and old growth forest, heavily populated by a wide range of birds and wildlife. Trails will be marked to provide guests easy access for walking and biking, in addition to designated pasture and pond observation areas with seating.
