Want to deepen your understanding of how horses think and behave? Our Horse Psychology Online Course welcomes horse people of all abilities, bringing expert training right to your home. The course is taught live by Kelly Marks, with support from IH Trainer Sandra Williams, , who is literally ‘in the field’ working with horses and owners every day. Together, they combine theoretical knowledge with real-world experience to help you better understand and work with horses.
What to Expect:
The course consists of eight one-hour lessons held live on eight consecutive Tuesday evenings from 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm GMT or you can catch up with recordings sent to you weekly. Extra time is given for answering questions that arise in the chat, as well as any additional queries. Sandra and Kelly are also available during the week to answer emails.
Each week, you will receive detailed documentation designed to support the session and syllabus. These materials will include in-depth information on the weekly topic and optional homework tasks that allow you to delve deeper into the subject. Over the course of eight weeks, these resources will come together to form a comprehensive document.
What Will You Learn?
What you put into this course reflects what you get out of it. We provide a wealth of resources and learning tools, both in and outside of the lectures, so that you can decide the scope of your learning depending on extra reading and personal study.
Main Topics Covered:
• Week 1 – Pros and cons of using food in equine training
• Week 2 – Recognising when it’s pain, not brain
• Week 3 & 4 – Behaviourism and beyond (Part 1 & 2)
• Week 4 – Behaviourism and beyond (Part 2)
• Week 5 – The senses, brain, and how a horse understands
• Week 6 – The problem-solving procedure
• Week 7 – How do people (inadvertently) teach horses to be bad? (And how can we unravel this?)

This structure ensures you have all the tools needed to engage with the material effectively and deepen your understanding of equine training and behaviour.

Why is This Course Right for Me?
This course is designed to change the way you think around horses, taking into consideration how they see and sense the world, what they respond to, and how even small changes in our behaviour can improve the way we interact with them.
Whether you’re an equine vet or ride once a month at a riding school, there is guaranteed to be valuable information and fresh perspectives in this course that you may not have considered before.
But don’t just take our word for it—here’s what others have to say:

Here’s What Some of Our 2024 Horse Psychology Graduates Have to Say…
Suze Leonard – Dec 2024
"I recently attended the 8-week online horse psychology course and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about how horses think. The course format delivered by Kelly, Sandra, and the team was friendly and fun, and the information shared was based on reliable experience as well as the latest published facts. It busted the horsey ‘old wives’ tales’ and myths that are often circulated elsewhere! Great value for money, and I really looked forward to the weekly Zoom sessions. Thanks so much!"
Megan – Dec 2024
"I joined the online horse psychology course and it was really informative. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in understanding whether a horse’s behaviour is due to pain rather than just ‘naughtiness’.
The ladies who ran the course were so lovely and explained everything really well. I liked that they used real scenarios to explain the topics. This helped me relate the lessons to some of the issues I’ve had with my own horses.
A really good course—a shame that it’s finished! Each time, you learn something new (I definitely did) 😀."
Emily Sanders – Dec 2024
"Having just completed the online psychology course, I can honestly say it was fantastic.
I have learnt so much from all of them—it has literally changed my life and given me the confidence to pursue a change in career, helping problem horses. The detailed course notes mean I can go over everything again whenever I need to, and I know there is so much ongoing support available via the office.
All the instructors, as always, are very approachable and supportive. I love how, on all the courses, everyone’s opinion is valid. It’s less about students simply copying the teacher and more about collaborative discussion to learn best practices for the benefit of the horse.
Highly recommend to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of horse behaviour and training."
You will need to be a member of the Intelligent Horsemanship Association (if not already a member) to attend this course.
