An introduction to navigation, comprising a short classroom presentation followed by practice on a walk in the Hope Valley. The course focuses on map reading and covers navigating without a compass, mainly using rights of way. It includes an introduction to map types and scales; map symbols; the National Grid system; grid references; distances; contours and the shapes of the terrain; orientating the map using topographical features and relating it to the ground.
Event Grade: Easy short walks on paths that may be rough and uneven. Taken at a leisurely pace. May involve stiles and rough ground.
Extra Items: OS Explorer map (1:25,000) OL1 The Peak District Dark Peak Area; a pen or pencil.
Event Terrain: Short sections along the road and good, well-drained footpaths but 3 sections across fields which may be wet and muddy. One gradual ascent.

Parking: Parking is very difficult in Edale at busy times. No parking is available at the Visitor Centre. There is a Pay and Display car park near Edale Station. From the car park, walk under the rail bridge for 200 yards towards Edale Village. A number of nearby farmers are offering overspill parking in their fields. There are toilets at the P&D car park; none at VC.
Near Rail Station: Yes. Edale Rail Station lies on the Manchester-Sheffield rail line. From the station, walk for 200 yards towards Edale Village to the Visitor Centre.
Near Bus Route: Yes. High Peak bus 62 connects Edale to Castleton, Hope and Buxton.
