Welcome to the opening of the exhibition Notes for Our Legacy by Janne Riikonen, Sat Aug 23, between 16-20.
In Notes for Our Legacy, artist and photographer Janne Riikonen takes on an iconic symbol of the advertising industry: the billboard sign. By photographing empty billboard scaffoldings and experimenting with collage, painting, print and papermaking, Riikonen creates a manifesto that criticizes and questions consumer culture.
The empty billboards depicted in the photographs are strategically positioned in the midst of an urban space to catch our gaze. The messages of the advertisements are clear; they aim to sell something. But what?
Beneath this primary message lies a subtle, subliminal undertone of inadequacy – you can do, look and behave better. Even in the absence of adverts, as in Riikonens images, the billboard remains a medium of communication, but this time with a very uncertain message.
In Notes for Our Legacy, Riikonen deconstructs the billboards and anonymizes advertisements creating something new. By experimenting with printing methods and paper making, he breaks up and rebuilds the photographs, creating new billboards but with a critical message.
In his own subtle and experimental way, Riikonen questions our ideas of consumption. With the use of silk screen printing, riso printing and spray paint, the works become ephemeral - it will change over time - just like the billboards that rust away or get bleached by the sun.
Janne Riikonen (1988) is a Finnish photographic artist and photobook publisher based in Stockholm. He holds a Master of Arts degree from Mid Sweden University and explores a range of analogue techniques in his artistic practice. His work is grounded in material exploration, tactility, and photographic storytelling. Riikonen is also the founder, publisher, and editor of Kult Books, an independent photobook imprint he established in 2017.
