Our May Lecture - Birkby Grange: A ‘Villa Mansion’ and its neighbourhood 1750-2025

Lorna Brooks rounds off our 2024/25 season with a talk which will begin with well-hidden but well-preserved Birkby Grange - its buildings, its old estate and its former inhabitants - and broaden into an exploration of the surrounding area. Lorna is a long-time Birkby resident who recently worked for Kirklees Local Studies Library and has helped to lead walks for Discover Huddersfield.

Having walked past Birkby Grange almost every day for years, Lorna was fascinated to examine the 1830 will of owner Thomas Holroyd and to look at local deeds, maps and other records. This research intensified her enthusiasm for the local area - its buildings, landscape and people.
