Johnnie Means Aquatics (JMA) will host the 4th Annual International Water Safety Day (IWSD) festival on Saturday May 17 2025 at 10:00 AM held at the Texas Southern University Recreation Center. Phillips 66 is the presenting sponsor for the 4th Annual International Water Safety Day.
This event aims to raise awareness about water safety measures and equip individuals with skills and knowledge to prevent drowning tragedies.
Activities and Learning Opportunities will include:
Drowning Prevention Workshops: Where experts will discuss risk factors early warning
signs and crucial interventions for preventing drowning in open water and swimming pools.
Learn-to-Swim Demonstrations: Where participants will witness certified instructors display swimming techniques and basic survival skills for all ages and abilities.
Lifeguard Training Session: Lifeguards will demonstrate rescue techniques and learn about their role in ensuring public safety at aquatic facilities.
Interactive Stations will include:
Safe Equipment Showcase: Exploring the proper use of life jackets flotation devices and other safety equipment for various water activities.
Pool Safety Zone: Where participants learn about pool deck maintenance supervision strategies and safe play practices for children.
Open Water Awareness: Discover essential precautions for boating kayaking and enjoying beaches safely.
First Aid and CPR Training: Gain valuable skills in basic first aid and CPR techniques for water emergencies.
Family Fun Zone: With water-themed games activities and educational resources for all ages.
Guest Speakers and facilitators: Participants will hear from water safety advocates survivors and professionals sharing their insights and experiences. This year our featured guest speaker is TBA. The guest speaker at last year’s event was 2004 Olympian and USA Swimming Foundation/Swim1922 spokesperson Maritza Correia McClendon the first African America woman to make the USA Swim Team and earn a Medal. IWSD has been supported and recognized by governmental bodies organizations and corporations including the 112TH Congress 2D Session which supported IWSD on May 15 2012 with US H.Res. 658 USA Swimming Foundation which issued a letter of support of IWSD on January 11 2013 the Shanghai Disney Resort which supported IWSD on May 15 2014 the
National Association of State Boards of Education which issued a letter of support of IWSD among many others.
