AUTHOR EVENT + PERFORMANCE - RICK MITCHELL WITH DR. ROBERT MORGAN & THE H.S.P.V.A. JAZZ COMBO

On Saturday, July 12 at 1 p.m., author Rick Mitchell will sign copies and read from his book Jazz In the New Millennium: Live and Well, Revised Edition at Cactus Music, 2110 Portsmouth, Houston. The book includes 84 profiles of the leading 21st Century jazz musicians, including several from Houston.

Mitchell, who now lives in Portland, Oregon, is the former music critic at The Houston Chronicle and the longtime jazz program notes annotator for DACAMERA of Houston. He currently hosts a nationally-syndicated radio program, also called Jazz in the New Millennium. Mitchell will be joined by special guest Dr. Robert Morgan, retired director of the HSPVA jazz program, and the HSPVA student jazz combo under the direction of James Westfall. They will discuss the outsized role Houston-bred musicians have played in the creative renaissance of jazz in the current century.

“The greatest music of the first 25 years of the 21st Century holds its own with the greatest music in any previous era of jazz,” says Mitchell. “Will young listeners fifty years from now discover the music of Joshua Redman and Cecile McLorin Salvant and approach them with same reverence that we now have for Lester Young and Billie Holiday? I don’t know. But I am here to make the case that they should.”
