Wayne’s Story

When you first meet Wayne if you don’t already know him you soon realise that he is a joker, constantly messing about, up-to to mischief and looking for the next laugh. He’ll put a smile on anyone’s face and brighten up the darkest of days. The sparkle in his eyes and his cheeky smile is infectious.
He’s got the best family, Lynn - his soul mate who keeps him in check and four wonderful kids - Siobhan, Macy, Luca and Tommy.
On 10th February 2024, Wayne was going about his day to day routine, and had come home from the gym and commented that his sight in his right eye had become blurred. A few days earlier, Wayne had mentioned about having a stiff neck. Wayne suddenly appeared agitated, began to groan and started rocking forwards and backwards then sat down.
Wayne was taken to Hospital for a CT scan and was admitted onto Pinderfields Stroke Assessment Unit, Wayne was ready to be discharged after they felt he had suffered a mini stroke (TIA) when he began to display similar symptoms to what he did earlier in the day.
Wayne then was taken for an MRI scan and him and his family were informed that he had in fact suffered an ischemic stroke. This stroke left Wayne with slurred speech and reduced movement to his right arm and leg. Wayne remained on the ward overnight for further observations.
On 11th February, Wayne experienced a further set of symptoms, and fell to the floor while walking to the toilet, this was a further stroke. This stroke resulted in Wayne losing all speech, his ability to swallow and being paralysed on his right side. Wayne had a feeding tube inserted and remained in hospital for 18 weeks. During this time Wayne was also found to have a blood clot on his lung.
During Wayne’s stay in hospital, he battled infections, learning to swallow again, and drinking liquids with thickener.
Wayne was discharged from hospital on 17th June 2024, and currently remains bed bound, paralysed on his right side and unable to provide any self care for himself.
However the fighter within Wayne has shone through and against the odds he continues his recovery at home with the support his family. It has been really tough for everyone as Wayne is confined to the lounge and requires constant care. Coming to terms with his situation has also been extremely challenging for him but with the love and help from Lynn and the kids Wayne is now more positive. If you go and see him you’ll see the cheeky smile and sparkle in his eyes is back. He’s progressed a lot but there’s still room for more. That’s where we can help.
Lynn and the kids have done amazing but they’ve done this virtually on their own and with little support. No adaptations help is available for the house. Speech and cognitive therapy has stopped and has to be paid for. His physiotherapy is going well and he’s started to get a little movement down his right side but he needs more sessions.
The Wrights were too proud to ask for help and it’s taken a lot of convincing just to get their permission to set this page up. I know they’d be the first to help anyone else if they were in a similar situation so it’s our turn to help them. Wayne has a lot of friends so let’s all give what we can because with a little bit of financial support it will make a massive difference to our mate Wayne’s lifestyle and give him the quality of life that he deserves.
