The Cow Shed Backyard Ultra follows the same format as Big’s Backyard Ultra.
In simple terms that means competitors must complete the 4.1-mile loop on the hour every hour until only 1 runner remains.
The bell will be sounded exactly on the hour and if you have failed to make the starting area before the bell rings, then you will be disqualified from the event and will become one of the many DNF’s!
There will be only 1 athlete who does not receive a DNF and they will be crowned the champ!
The current course record was set in 2024 by Kieron day, who completed 35 yards. Robert Bacosca got the assist.
New for 2025 will be a 5 person team option. Get your mates/running club or anyone for that matter together and run the event as part of a team.
Your totals will be totted up and the winning team will receive a team trophy and lots of kudos!
Individual totals will still be counted in the normal way to determine the ultimate individual champ. Your team yard will only count while you have at least 2 runners from your team running. Once your team is down to 1, that person is classed as a solo runner.
All competitors will receive an event memento, free camping for you and your family throughout the event and access to hot and cold water/tea/coffee/fruit/sweets etc.
You will need to get your pacing right, as go to fast and you are going to be hanging around at the start waiting to go again but take it too easy and you may find yourself working harder than you need to, to make the time limit.
The course is not flat and has approx. 550ft of elevation gain on each loop, saying that, it can easily be completed inside the 1-hour time limit. It is a mixture of farmland, single-track trail, and woodland dirt tracks. Our event takes place on private land, it is therefore not possible to recce the route before race day!
You must wear appropriate clothing for the weather, if the event team feel that you are not appropriately dressed you will not be allowed to continue. If you are tough enough to run all day and into the night, you’re going to need a headtorch and spare batteries.
There will be onsite catering to purchase during the event, either a chip van, pizza van or burger van.
