About the event

Hiking Field Trip: Lung Fu Shan Trail-The sights and sounds of nature
The Royal Geographical Society – Hong Kong is delighted to invite members and guests on a guided hiking field trip along the scenic Lung Fu Shan Trail, in collaboration with V'air, an organisation dedicated to promoting local eco-tourism and sustainable education.

Lung Fu Shan is the smallest of Hong Kong’s country parks, with only 47 hectares, yet it is a serene oasis featuring tree-shrouded paved heritage trails and lush woodlands. Despite its modest size, the park offers a remarkable blend of biodiversity, cultural relics and tranquil scenery.

Our journey begins at The Peak Tower, from where we will descend through the shaded Lung Fu Shan trail to Sai Ying Pun.

The woodlands of Lung Fu Shan are home to over 115 species of birds, butterflies and other wildlife, and participants learn about different native tree species as a result of decades-long afforestation efforts designed to protect and restore native biodiversity.

Throughout the approximately three-hour walk, we'll explore the Pinewood Battery, completed in 1905 as part of the British defence system, along with remnants of old fortifications that bear witness to Hong Kong’s wartime past. One of the few remaining Victoria City boundary stones can also be found along the route, offering a tangible link to the early urban limits of Hong Kong history. This is a moderately easy, mostly downhill walk suitable for participants of all fitness levels.

In addition to its wartime relics and natural beauty, Lung Fu Shan is home to several graded waterworks heritage buildings, nestled within the campus of The University of Hong Kong. These structures offer insight into the city’s historical water supply development and early efforts at channelisation—an often-overlooked yet vital part of Hong Kong’s infrastructural evolution.
