This flagship reserve offers fantastic opportunities to see reedbed birds, such as Marsh Harrier, Bittern and Bearded Tit, as well as passage and departing migrants. Options include visiting the ‘new’ land towards Salthouse, the East Bank and the shingle beach.
Facilities: 6 hides, visitor centre, shop, large cafe, toilets, outside seating
Distances and accessibility: The reserve is classed as ‘Grade 1: comfortable walking’. A mix of boardwalks and accessible (compacted hoggin) paths give access to four hides and the East Bank. A 3 mile circuit to the beach is popular but walking on the coastal shingle is challenging. There are options to walk on grass paths to the ‘new’ land and as far as Salthouse.
Admission charges: NWT members free (bring your membership card). Non-members: £5.50 in cash to be paid on the coach. This is a requirement set by the reserve for Group bookings so, even if you don't usually carry cash, please bring the necessary!
Coach pick ups: the coach departs Stevenage: 7.15am. Hitchin: 7.30am. Letchworth: 7.45am. Baldock on request. Royston: 8.05am
Coach fee £30. Coach fares are payable in advance - preferably at least 2 weeks beforehand - through Malcolm. Call him (leave a message if there's no answer) or speak to him at our Indoor Meeting on Friday 5 September. Contact details are in our programme for 2025-2026 - see pinned post.
