A few snippets of Swedish Egil’s career - A man always 1-step ahead of the music scene.
_ _ _ _
Wind back the clocks to 1976 for the arrival of Egil from Sweden, who hits the streets running and quickly lands a Mobile DJ gig with the help of then Program Director at K100 (located at the current CNN building on Sunset). Prior to that, he was creating radio jingles in Sweden under the DJ name of Royal Egil.
Egil meets Richard Blade, also working as a mobile DJ “Towards 2000” who goes on to pick up a few DJ slots at KROQ. This friendship would ultimately be Egil’s way into KROQ Radio himself. NOTE – Richard Blade later goes on to coin his DJ name to “Swedish Egil.”
Egil pivots from playing Funk & Soul to Disco when playing a track at a local gig – namely the Trammps’ HIT “Disco Inferno.” That genre transition would later land him a residency at Nicks Fish Market on Sunset, conveniently located just below the Atlantic Records’ offices. His record collecting takes off, buying and being presented 100s of records weekly from different bands looking to get DJ and Radio exposure.
Not to forget his brief stint DJing Country music around the time of Urban Cowboy being released in 1980. This prompted Egil to buy attire from Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors - some of which he still owns today.
By the early 1980s while at KROQ, Egil is exposed to a local band, “Oingo Boingo” and their new track ‘Only a Lad’ and immediately shifts his interest from Disco & Country to New Wave, quickly moving on to discover and launch another new band, BERLIN, even losing his Country & Western gig at Stewart Andersons due to spinning “New Wave.”
Another milestone break occurs at KROQ when playing an unknown song during the “Jocks choice” hour at the station. He gets asked during a station walk-up to play XTC’s ‘Dear God’ which ultimately would launch the band’s career.
In addition to spinning New Wave, Egil hosted important genre shows such as Reggae Revolution, Dance Music Countdown, Nyqvist Exercises, and New American Rock.
In 1991, EGIL jumped the KROQ ship to work alongside an old friend and KROQ DJ, Feddy Snakeskin at the newly minted MARRS FM. Focusing almost exclusively on exploding the Electronica scene with a heavy focus on House & Techno.
After MARRS FM takes an ill fated dip into the Jazz format, Egil begins the syndicated dance music program “Groove Radio.” Humble beginnings, such as mailing DAT Tapes to secondary markets and hustling ad sales, pay off as the show becomes a massive success and leads to many legendary sessions with Carl Cox, Daft Punk, Spice Girls, Prodigy, Sasha + Digweed, Praga Khan, Paul Oakenfold & others. A record label soon sas Egil teams up with Brian Turner at Priority Records.
For 15 years Egil organized the “Holiday Groove” benefit concerts, sold out events taking place in the hottest Hollywood clubs of the era - Playhouse, Sound and Avalon, you name it! Drawing upon top acts such as Mark Farina, Doc Martin, The Crystal Method, this series of parties became legend.
Starting in 2015 and to this day Eigl continues to host 80’s shows on Sirius XM and promoting new electronic music through Groove Radio, currently broadcasting on Insomniac Radio 1.
Over a 50-year career, The Egil has been instrumental in helping break many hit singles. Still beloved tracks from New Order, Moby, Shamen, 808 State, Tiesto, Norman Cook, Nirvana and 100’s of others still owe him a bit of thanks.
In a world of overnight and self professed “icons,” this man is a true LEGEND!! See if for yourself and see you here, only at the World Famous Record Parlour in Hollywood.
