Radically Miscast Shakespeare | Twelfth Night
This summer, The Porters of Hellsgate sees the return of the hit Free Reading Series RADICALLY MISCAST SHAKESPEARE.
The readings are conceived of and produced by Associate Artistic Director DAWN ALDEN, who says of the series, “Despite modern productions making great strides with ‘colorblind’ and ‘genderblind’ casting, there are still great roles in Shakespeare that many actors will never get to play, because directors and producers cannot imagine them in those roles. If Shakespeare’s works are universal (and we believe they are) let’s put that to the test!”
The first reading of the series sees the return of L. Stephanie Tait as director. She describes her excitement about a radically miscast Twelfth Night: “Having actors in roles they felt they would never otherwise be cast means we get to reevaluate what sort of societal, cultural, and personal factors influence these characters and the relationships between them. It also affords us the ability to go back to the text and fully explore the identities and sexualities of each individual with fresh perspectives outside of the ‘traditional’ ideas we see time and again.”
