About the event

From Code to Consequences: The Role of AI Regulation in Our Lives
Speaker: Dr. Gregory Dobler
LIVE at the UPPER Arden Gild Hall AND via Zoom
2126 The Highway, Arden, Wilmington, DE 19810

Artificial intelligence is now deeply embedded in our daily lives. It shapes the jobs we do, the services we rely on, how we interact with one another, and the decisions that affect us – often in ways we don't see. This talk will examine how different approaches to AI regulation and governance can guide both the development of these powerful technologies and how they are used in society. Any effective regulatory framework must be closely tied to a deep understanding of how AIs function and, crucially, how they are "born". The regulatory rules we establish today will influence who benefits, who is affected, and whose voices are heard. Ultimately, the choices we make now will shape the fairness, accountability, equity, and inclusivity of AI for years to come.

Our speaker, Dr. Gregory Dobler, is an urban data scientist whose research focuses on studying cities as complex systems. As the Director of the Urban Observatory (UO) facility at the University of Delaware and at NYU, he applies data analysis techniques from astronomy, computer vision, data science, AI, and machine learning to images of city skylines to study air quality, energy consumption, lighting technology, public health, and sustainability. In addition to his work with the UO, Dr. Dobler has also led data analysis projects in collaboration with local government agencies on the equitable distribution of green spaces, surrogate measures for traffic safety, and models of infectious disease spread.

This program is sponsored by The Scholars Gild, a part of the Arden Club. Scholars Gild meets the third Tuesday of the month, September through June. We usually use a hybrid live-Zoom model. There are sometimes technical glitches, so your patience is appreciated.

There is no fee to attend Scholars Gild discussions. We would like to encourage all to make a donation in person or at http://ardenclub.org/donate/. Your support helps keep the virtual and in-person lights on and makes possible dynamic programming like concerts, theater, dance, and of course, our Scholars Gild evenings.
